Kind Of Girl komt eraan
Kind of Girl is een nieuwe indie popband uit Denemarken. Het vierde lid van de band, Jesper Olander, die niet zingt of speelt, maar de band managet, besloot na een tip van Evonity mee te doen aan de massive multiplayer online music bumping game (MMOMBG) The Sixtyone. Hij besloot twee songs te uploaden en te zien wat er zou gaan gebeuren.
Behalve uit manager Jesper bestaat de band uit leading lady Sissel Olander (zang, gitaar), Rune Bohr (basgitaar, producer) en Soeren Moeller Nielsen (keybboard). Zowel op het podium als in de studio wordt Kind Of Girl verder nog bijgestaan door gitarist Joel Gjaersboel en drummer Rune “Nugge” Christensen.
Zelf noemt Kind Of Girl hun muziek “bass heavy synth-pop”. Van een band van dit niveau en met dit repertoire zou je verwachten dat ze is ingelijfd door een groot platenlabel, maar niets is minder waar. Kind Of Girl heeft er weloverwogen voor gekozen om onafhankelijk te blijven en zoveel mogelijk alles van merchandising en concertpromotie tot het pluggen en distribueren van de singles, zelf te organiseren.
Het belang van Internet neemt voor indie bands zoals Kind Of Girl alleen maar verder toe. Van de songs die naar The Sixtyone zijn geupload werden eerder al meer dan twee miljoen gratis kopieën via last.fm gedownload. Daarmee werd de groep de meest succesvolle Deense band aldaar. Behalve bij last.fm zijn hun songs ook via tientallen andere muzieksites online te beluisteren (luister bijvoorbeeld naar deze versie van Slave to your charms bij MP3.com.
Voor Jesper Olander is The Sixtyone anders dan andere muzieksites: Both radio and A & R build in to t61 makes it a lot more fun. T61 plus Maxbumps.net (fanforum: Evo) make a killer combination, and the active involvement of the listener, who is main focus, is really good thinking!
De vaststelling dat bij T61 de luisteraar meer centraal staat dan bij de meeste andere muzieksites, wordt door veel T61 artiesten gedeeld. Vooral de directe respons van Luisteraars valt daarbij op. Die kunnen op muziek reageren via Comment boxjes onder songs, of via de profielpagina van een artiest. En omdat afbrekende, ongefundeerde kritiek slecht is voor de markt, hoor je zelden een wanklank. J.O. daarover: The exposure you are bound to get from a site as t61 as a new comer is hard to beat. Buying stocks of recent registred companies is fun I guess.
Het spelelement van The Sixtyone is Kind Of Girl goed bevallen. Vanaf hun profielpagina hebben ze laten weten in het vervolg iedere eerste zondag van de maand een nieuwe song te uploaden. Zo’n soort gebaar naar de Luisteraar toe is niet alleen sympathiek, maar getuigt ook van strategisch inzicht. Iedereen die enthousiast is over de muziek en ook alle Luisteraars die een graantje mee willen pikken van het succes van de band, zal de upload pagina op die dagen extra goed in de gaten houden en nieuwe songs in een oogwenk naar de homepage bumpen. Door interactie met de Luisteraar aan te gaan neemt een Artiest actief deel aan het spel. Het is niet vereist en geeft ook geen garantie voor succes, maar het past wel precies in de benadering van de Kind Of Girl manager: The competetive aspect plays a large role. De komende maanden moet de zelf-promotie via Internet z’n vruchten af gaan werpen. Kind Of Girl acht de tijd rijp om voor het voetlicht te treden van een nog groter publiek. Jesper Olander: UK, Denmark, Germany, China , Holland, USA, Japan, Canada are countries we plan to release in in 2008/2009. All releases are to be followed by a release tour. We will also attend NXNE (North by Northeast - groot muziek- en filmfestival: Evo) in Toronto in 2009. We are in the process of making cover for the album and video now. When we have released in the UK in August we will begin to look at new material to be released on the second album - we are here to stay.
Kind Of Girls eerste single zal in oktober in Nederland worden uitgebracht en in januari 2009 komt de band naar Nederland voor een aantal concerten.
