“Someone You Replaced”
Vlak na hun debuut beloofde de Deense pop band Kind of Girl om iedere maand een nieuw nummer naar The Sixtyone te uploaden. Met de laatste song - Someone You Replaced - hebben ze zich tot nu toe prima aan hun woord gehouden.
Someone You Replaced is minder catchy dan de vorige songs. Niet dat de andere nummers vrolijke niemendalletjes waren, integendeel. Kind of Girl is weliswaar geen alt rock band, maar hun songs hebben die bluesy toonzetting die hun muziek net dat beetje extra diepgang geeft.
Het thema van de nieuwe song, die ook op hun nog uit te brengen album Lonely In A Modern Way verschijnt, is gedumpt worden door je geliefde: It’s all I ever be. Someone you replaced.
Dat is bepaald geen nieuw onderwerp voor een love song en dus let je bij dit soort liedjes niet op de verwoording van de ervaring, maar op de vertolking van de emotie.
Het nummer zet in met een klein strijkersensemble en akoustische gitaar. Dat roept onmiddelijk de herfstige sfeer van verlatenheid op. Als later bij het refrein de hele band inzet, voel je dat de hoofdpersoon zich al een beetje neerlegt bij de gebroken relatie: It’s all I can see. You don’t want me.
Het briljante van de song is, dat de coupletten dramatisch klinken, terwijl het refrein berustend is. Dat is een grote verdienste van zowel songwriter / zangeres Sissel Olander en producer / bassist Rune Bohr. Zij heeft de perfecte stem om dit soort songs te vertolken. Hij weet als geen ander hoe je een dergelijke melodramatische popsong het beste kan arrangeren en muzikaal moet aankleden.
